Too Little Too Late…
February 3, 2009
The Intellectual Property bookstore near my school is closing in about another two months. So now I feel lousy for not going there more often or buying from it more often since it was a great shop that’s a skip away from most of my classes. They’re getting rid of everything at 50% off so I stocked up on some things and was surprised at how much I got for two cents shy of $40.
(As you might know I love a good deal but I always feel awful about “Your loss is my gain” deals. I figured that I’m still helping by being a patron no matter when, but overall I still feel today’s entry title is still heavy on my conscience? Anywho…)
- The Diary of a Madman, The Government Inspector and Selected Stories Nikolay Gogol
- The Tales of Beedle the Bard J.K. Rowling
- The Book of Leviathan Peter Blegvad
- Olivia The Essential Latin Edition Ian Falconer
- Amelia’s Bully Survival Guide Marissa Moss
- Trigun Maximum #13 Yasuhiro Nightow
- Jellaby Kean Soo
The selection was random and sparse and all these titles caught my eye. Luckily a lot of the authors I already collect too much of were pretty much gone so I was able to get a sampling of stuff I normally wouldn’t.
I’m on a bit of a Gogol kick ever since I started reading Dead Souls. I’m hoping these short stories are just as interesting since it has the infamous The Overcoat in it. And by infamous I mean it’s the one story they kept talking about again an again in the mini-biography on Gogol they had at the beginning of Dead Souls.
As for Beetle Bard… the art and the names of the stories tempted me but the fact that all the proceeds go to charity won me over. I have to be honest that I’m not a huge fan of J.K. Rowling… I stopped reading Harry Potter at book 5 and really fell out of the whole craze for a long time. Not saying that just to rub any fans the wrong way I just didn’t like the writing. It doesn’t matter that one out of millions left the table early now does it? But after reading a page the writing seemed really charming… I don’t think I’ll regret this buy. (And if I do I have an ever growing young niece who would probably enjoy it 6 years from now)
Leviathan is a graphic novel I’ve seen in passing before. The condition on this (all alone it was) copy was good, the price was good, and the art and story seemed… kooky. That’s not a good word but it was just… weird. Good weird. A really friendly weird that you can’t help but like. Hopefully there’s no nasty surprises (that sometimes comes up with things that seem good weird…) and it’ll help me get a tone in my own artwork that I’ve been trying to reach for ages. Good weird. (Weird is easy, good weird is hard.)
Olivia. In Latin. My brother is going to think I’m crazy for trying to teach his baby girl Latin but oh well… (A cute book in easy to figure out Latin? Damn if I didn’t grab that quicker.) Even the back cover laudations for the book are in Latin. Dude. <3
I didn’t know they still made the Amelia series. I can’t wait to share that one with the niece when she’s old enough. I guess in the time being I’ll just… read it… a couple times… I’m a sucker for nostalgia.
Trigun is the only manga I collect and read. Or read period. I’m skipping a couple books by going to 13 but it’s the only one they had and 13 is my lucky number. Plus the first page that I opened to had Knives. Full page. Leaning on a giant nail? I guess I’ll find out what that’s about soon enough but but… oh my gosh it’s ridiculous. One of my worst fictional character weaknesses is Knives. It’s really the main thing that keeps me fairly nerdy. (Oh and my tendency to literally curl up with DWJ books and giggle my ass off while daydreaming about having good dwimmer. That’s a story for another day.)
Jellaby is a series that I follow online and I love Kean Soo’s work lots. http://www.keaner.net
It’s worth a look as are all the books I got. (I hope!)
I’ll post art tomorrow or Wednesday. Yay for bringing blogs back from the dead… again!
